We can't edit wiki/confluence pages anymore

Casey Cain

Hello, everyone.
I'm just trying to better understand what is going on.  There should be no issues editing pages if you are on wiki.opendaylight.org.
If you're still experiencing issues it may be because you have bookmarked pages on wiki.lfnetworking.org/display/ODL/****.  Please update your bookmarks with wiki.opendaylight.org
To help eliminate confusion, last night I made the "wiki.lfnetworking.org" version of the ODL wiki invisible and you should no longer be able to see or access it.  I have also worked with IT to ensure that all of the DNS entries are correct and you should not be getting redirected to wiki.lfnetworking.org when you are attempting to access the ODL wiki.  This should naturally point people to the correct location on wiki.opendaylight.org.

Please let me know if you're still experiencing issues or getting redirected to the incorrect wiki.  There may be an issue with either your bookmarks or the local cache.

Please also note that user @ mentions will not work until that user first logs in to the new wiki.opendaylight.org

Or is there a bigger issue?

The issue is also if you type just wiki.opendaylight.org in the Chrome browser, it does a Google search which returns https://wiki.lfnetworking.org/display/ODL/ which is a "Not permitted" page under lfnetworking wiki. If you type https://wiki.opendaylight.org/ and navigate from there things are golden.

Guillaume Lambert

Hi

Also for the few projects that try to keep their URLs up-to-date, it’s starting to be a little boring to have to update the wiki URL on the gerrit repo.

If I don’t mistake myself, the default ODL maven archetype mention the URL of the project wiki.

So theoretically , each time the wiki domain  changes, every ODL project should push a change to update their poms… on each active branch. (=3 changes thus).

It’s a little pity it is not performed automatically, I can count on my hand the project that have done this.

Let’s look at what happened in the last 3 months:

-          wiki.opendaylight.org became unreachable just before merging the Na SR2 release, what caused me some troubles.

There was a reference to the wiki inside our documentation, it created a failure in the LFN releng docs-lincheck job because this domain was no more reachable…

At that time, the URL wiki-archive.opendaylight.org was not up yet. We had no other choice than to reference an empty content in the domain wiki.lfnetworking.org.

-          There were a few days off during when the old wiki content was only viewable in google cache. Finally the content became available in wiki-archive.opendaylight.org just after Na SR2.

New change to update the documentation for Mg SR0.

-          After Mg SR0, PTLs were asked to migrate their wiki on LFN confluence. It was a good opportunity to refresh the old contents.
But I doubt every projects managed to do that only in the 2 or 3  weeks given.

Since mediawiki is based on a different structure and language than confluence, the exercise is a little cumbersome and it leads to different paths in URL…

Also now the wiki is migrated, new change to update the wiki URL for Mg SR1.

-          Mg SR1 is released and just after that,  we are told that we are back to the old wiki domain and that the LFN wiki URL is no more reachable…

New change to come so…

(Too bad we can’t reuse the mediawiki old paths since they all have changed – otherwise projects that didn’t migrate would have become again up-to-date!).

It’s true we received some pieces of information on the mailing-list but I would have appreciated a clear explanation about the strategy here if there is one.
I am sorry but I didn’t catch by which fancy those domains migrations and unavailability appear, and also why they can’t be better synchronized with (at least major) release schedules.

Can we try to think about it next time, if there is one ?

My 2 cents

Guillaume

synchronized with (at least major) release schedules.

Can we try to think about it next time, if there is one ?
I completely agree with the points raised.

As such, I think documentation is best kept in project's docs/**.rst and
hence have pointers to docs.opendaylight.org.

Having said that, I have done zero work towards that in the project I am
stewarding, sorry.

Hello Robert and Guillaume

Let me add Andrew to this conversation but I believe that there won't be anymore domain migration for ODL wiki. In any case, there is also a ticket for an automatic redirect but I'm not sure on the status of that.

Thanks

I understand the frustration of the domain changes.  However, I should point out that there is no intention of having any further domain changes, nor was there supposed to be any domain changes in the first place.
When the TSC agreed to migrate from MediaWiki to Confluence, we set up the wiki-archive domain and agreed that Projects would migrate their data from MediaWiki.  The Confluence server was originally set up to direct to the correct domain (wiki.opendaylight.org).  However, due to some limitations to the way that Confluence works, the wiki.opendaylight.org domain only re-directed to wiki.lfnetworking.org/display/ODL/***
The issue of the data not being migrated and the redirection not working correctly caused unnecessary confusion in the Community.

Fortunately, now that the DNS issues are resolved by migrating the Confluence server to its own instance.  When the Projects finally migrate their project data over, these issues should be resolved.  There is an Intern that will be starting soon that will be able to help with some of the migration.  However, PTLs should not rely on the Intern to migrate their project data.  wiki-archive is supposed to be deprecated at this point and Projects should make it a priority to migrate their data at their earliest possible convenience.

Guillaume Lambert

Hi

I appreciate your feedback and your explanations Casey. I am  glad to read those domains changes were not expected in the first place.

Though, it is not the first time I have to struggle with LFN infra migrations during an ODL releasing phase.

(for example python3.5 no more supported in docs/docs-linkcheck on the gate).

The frustration apart, it also causes a problem to reference the materials needed by potential new contributors or users.

This deserves to be discussed at the community level in my opinion.

So I’ve proposed an open discussion for the next June Virtual Developer & Testing Forum to talk about all of that.

Robert, I’ve added you as a Topic Leader since you’ve showed some interest in the topic but feel free to remove yourself if you don’t want to appear there.

Best Regards

Guillaume
