Lithium schedule and timeline
Christopher Price <christopher.price@...>
Hi TSC,
I’d like to raise a discussion on pushing back on the current time plans for the Lithium release by 2 weeks or so.
We have some ideas to work through with the community for activities we would like to incubate through the Lithium cycle. The challenge we are facing is that our ability to have everything prepared in the current timeframe so close to Helium delivery
is a little tough.
The need (or our plan) to socialise activities at the summit and then work through the details of a proposal with interested parties and submit them for review would seem to benefit from a little more time prior to beginning the release cycle.
I understand there are many issues related to getting Lithium started and including needed process and infrastructure improvement activities, however it may be these activities could also benefit from a little breathing time to discuss and establish priorities
after cutting Helium.
Happy to hear feedback and considerations, it maybe a topic we could raise this week for discussion on the call.

My take is that we try to make as much progress as we can in a serious way over the next two weeks (including at the summit) and see where we get rather than pushing it out off hand.
That being said, I couldn't agree more that we really need to have an involved discussion of the Lithium release plan and how to learn from our success and mistakes.

Colin,
I believe the date for "Last call for new projects eligible to join" currently is Oct 17 - it will help if that could be pushed to Oct 31 in my opinion (to have more involved discussions before folks do the project proposals - as this discussion phase is very important).
Also the rationale for that date is that it is supposed to be 2 weeks before M1 (Nov 6) to have 2 week public comment period. Actually that date currently is 3 weeks before M1.

So, moving that date to October 23rd is something which I believe is just fixing the document to be internally consistent and gives an extra (almost) week. I just made that change [0]. I think that gives us a month until any aspect of the release plan starts to have any teeth. Also, I'll note that the release plan says:
Please note that the TSC reserves the right to allow projects to enter the Simultaneous Release for a reasonable period of time after the M1 date
For example, the TSC may allow additional time if a project is delayed by the IPR Review process.
We've availed ourselves of that in the past.
I'm not saying that if it comes to it, we shouldn't consider pushing back dates, but that we should do our best to make progress in the interim and use pushing back dates as a contingency plan. In particular, I know that Ryan and I have expressed concerns [1] about our ability to take on new projects given some of our accumulated process and infrastructure debt and that might enough to force us to push things out.
