New projects (related to SDN's application in wireless domain) will be proposed

Junyu Lai

Dear my colleagues,

I am Junyu Lai, a researcher in computer networking and telecommunications domain. We are currently doing research on applying SDN in wireless domain, particularly in cellular radio access networks (RANs) and Carrier-grade WIFI. These two research topics currently are very hot in both academia and industry. One example is that ONF has already established a Working Group called Wireless & Mobile WG to cover this field.

However, it looks that none of the existing OpenDaylish sub-projects are directly related to wireless. In order to brigde the gap, we are very interested in extending the OpenDaylight platform to the wireless domain and therefore are proposing two projects:
1) OpenDaylight Extension to Cellular RAN, and
2) OpenDaylight Extension to Carrier-grade WLAN.

We will fill out the required information on the dev-wiki ASAP, and are looking forward to getting your valuable comments!

Hi Junyu,

Welcome to the community, I look forward to seeing the information being available on the proposal pages.
Of interest to me would be to understand your plans regarding the referred to the ONF WMWG.  Is the intention of this work to provide a realization of the use cases identified in the WG or do you have specific activities in mind already?

/ Chris

Dear Christopher and all,

Thank you very for your comments!

In terms of Christopher's question, the answer is that we have specific activities in mind already. In the charpter of ONF WMWG, there are around 17 use cases have been identified, and most of which are related to mobile core and backhaul network; only sections (7.8), (7.16) and (7.17) may be relavant to RAN, although they are still different from our concerns. What we are really interested in is to enable SDN feature on base stations (e.g., eNodeB for LTE) and in Carrier-Wi-Fi (i.e., AC & AP), which will be detailed in the upcoming proposal pages:)

Any questions or comments are more than welcome!

BR,
Junyu

Junyu,
Typically the proposals are provided, and when the submitter is happy with the proposal
they then inform the project-proposals list.  There is a two week period of public review prior
to creation review for a project, and that timer typically starts from when the completed proposal
is announced to the project-proposals list :)

Happy to have you guys on board, and delighted to see you listed an IRC handle in your proposal :)

Subject: [Project-proposals] New projects (related to SDN's application in wireless domain) will be proposed

BR,

I have already uploaded one of our proposals to the dev-WIKI, and would highly appreciate if you can feedback us your valuable comments. Also, if you are interested in this project and would like to contribute, please just drop me a line, and I will include your name in the WIKI page.

Junyu,
Typically the proposals are provided, and when the submitter is happy with the proposal
they then inform the project-proposals list.  There is a two week period of public review prior
to creation review for a project, and that timer typically starts from when the completed proposal
is announced to the project-proposals list :)

Happy to have you guys on board, and delighted to see you listed an IRC handle in your proposal :)

Dear All,

I am very sorry to inform you that, due to our internal reasons, the
proposed two (wireless related) projects are temporarily withdrawn. It is
not yet clear that whether we will be allowed to re-post them.

Anyway, thank you very much for your attentions, comments, and
understanding. We are sorry about any inconvinience.
Sorry to hear but thank you for the update.

Hi David, and All,

Sorry for the late response! I just came back from a business trip. As you
mentioned "the proposal page(s) be up for two weeks before moving to
creation review". I think the creation review can be happened after the
2-week waiting time. Please keep in touch!

Junyu

Dear All,

I have already uploaded the detailed project proposal pages for the two
wireless related projects, namely:

https://wiki.opendaylight.org/view/Project_Proposals:OpenDaylight_Cellular_RAN

https://wiki.opendaylight.org/view/Project_Proposals:OpenDaylight_Carrier/Enterprise_WLAN

Please feel free to contact us if you are also interested in these
projects.
Your valuable comments would be highly appreciated!

Junyu,

Thank you very much for these proposals. Please let us know when you'd
like to do a creation review for the projects. Note that we require
that the proposal page(s) be up for two weeks before moving to
creation review.

Thanks again for the contributions and look forward to working with you.

Dear Ed, and all,

Thank you for the message!

I have already uploaded one of our proposals to the dev-WIKI, and
would
highly appreciate if you can feedback us your valuable comments. Also,
if
you are interested in this project and would like to contribute,
please just
drop me a line, and I will include your name in the WIKI page.

P.S. I will upload the second proposal on Enterprise / Carrier WLAN
ASAP.

Junyu

Junyu,
Typically the proposals are provided, and when the submitter is happy
with the proposal
they then inform the project-proposals list. There is a two week
period
of public review prior
to creation review for a project, and that timer typically starts
from
when the completed proposal
is announced to the project-proposals list :)

Happy to have you guys on board, and delighted to see you listed an
IRC
handle in your proposal :)

Dear Christopher, Thomas, and all,

I apologize that the two detailed proposals are not uploaded in time.
The
reason lies in the fact that the feedback from my colleagues are
delayed, so
I have no idea about their comments so far. Perhaps I can at first
post the
two detailed proposals for your review and then combine the the
comments
from you and my colleagues into them. Do you think this way is
feasible?

Junyu

Junyu,

more info would be fantastic. typically people have written up the
details in wiki format (rather than emailing around documents). if
you need
help with that ask here and someone will help.

Hi Junyu,

Is there any further information on the proposed projects?
It would be great to understand the scope as early as possible to
give
interested parties a chance to discuss and potentially collaborate.

Dear Ken, and all,

I have prepared the Project Proposal pages, and circulated to my
colleagues for review. Once the review results get back, I will
upload them
to the OpenDaylight wiki website. The concreate time could be in the
middle
of the next week. Sorry for letting you wait for so long time!

Subject: [Project-proposals] New projects (related to SDN's
application
in wireless domain) will be proposed

Dear my colleagues,

I am Junyu Lai, a researcher in computer networking and
telecommunications domain. We are currently doing research on
applying SDN
in wireless domain, particularly in cellular radio access networks
(RANs)
and Carrier-grade WIFI. These two research topics currently are
very hot in
both academia and industry. One example is that ONF has already
established
a Working Group called Wireless & Mobile WG to cover this field.

However, it looks that none of the existing OpenDaylish
sub-projects
are directly related to wireless. In order to brigde the gap, we
are very
interested in extending the OpenDaylight platform to the wireless
domain and
therefore are proposing two projects:
1) OpenDaylight Extension to Cellular RAN, and
2) OpenDaylight Extension to Carrier-grade WLAN.

We will fill out the required information on the dev-wiki ASAP, and
are
looking forward to getting your valuable comments!

BR,
