Work with OpenDaylight for SC15 event?
Phil Robb
Hello Kai & Jensen: I sent this to Richard yesterday not realizing that the leadership of the project has changed this past week. The folks at CalTech woking on the Large Hadron Collider are using OpenDaylight to distribute the data they collect to a network of participating universities and they're interested in using ALTO as part of that effort. However, they are having some issues in getting everything stood up. Could you guys take a look at the email below and respond to Losif Legrand and team with any insights you may have? Thanks in advance for your help with this. Phil.

As you can see we have some very specific questions, and an issue of documentation as well. Thanks for following this through with Iosif (and the other team members cited). Best regards Harvey On 10/30/2015 4:22 PM, Phil Robb wrote:

Hi Losif, Thanks for your feedback."ALTO:Lithium User Guide" (https://wiki.opendaylight.org/view/ALTO:Lithium_User_Guide) assumes that you are using OpenDaylight Lithium Release. But It seems that you are not using the Lithium Release. These modules you list in karaf are in our master branch, so the Lithium User Guide is not fit for them. However, I am not sure how you install your OpenDaylight. May I get your command-line history or some logs so that we can help you better? BTW. I think you can get the pre-built version of ODL Lithium-SR2 from this link (https://www.opendaylight.org/downloads). Regards,

Hello Jensen,
Thank you very much for your email. Azher from our group ( in cc ) installed the ODL , and as far as know from him, he installed the pre-built Lithium - SR2. Azher , please send Jensen the command line history from our installation. With Best Regards, Iosif On 10/31/2015 08:04 AM, Jensen Zhang wrote:

We recently moved from Lithium 0.3.2 snapshot to Lithium 0.4.0
snapshot. I added features in order at line 60, while rest by Iosif.

Hi Azher, May I ask which version are you using? Lithium-0.3.2-SNAPSHOT is not a stable version. And Lithium-0.4.0 is not a valid version number. So I assume you're using Beryllium 0.4.0, which is not a stable version either. I suggest you downgrade to a stable version of ODL, say 0.3.2-Lithium-SR2, to solve these problems. I agree with Junzhuo (Austin). And Azher, if you want to use stable ODL and ALTO, please try 0.3.2-Lithium-SR2. Because it is the latest stable release version. Please check this link: https://wiki.opendaylight.org/view/CrossProject:Integration_Group:Controller_Artifacts.

First sorry for the delay in response---I was on the road until early today. Let me start by saying that it is wonderful that you are looking into ALTO in the context of your wonderful project. The feedback from you is great for the ALTO project to improve. At the same time, we apology for the inaccuracies and hence the issues caused. Here is my proposal to move forward: 1. We will first go over the issues discovered by you in your email, one by one, to verify and proposal fixes; please give us two days; 2. After 1., we want to schedule a meet up with you to go over the issues with you and work together; I believe that no one is more motivated than us to fix the issues; 3. After 2., we will send a summary to Phil and others on what both ALTO and other ODL project can learn to improve. How does the preceding sound? Richard

Thank really very much for your email. I think we can use the ODL version that you suggest is better for using ALTO. We would like to use ALTO based on the North Bound REST API. As the time we have until SC15 is quite short, it wll be very useful for us if you have some examples in how o use it. I would like to start with a quite simple topology ( the attached diagram ) where we have four sites in a ring and than I hope we can extend it for more complex cases. Thank you very much. Best Regards, Iosif

Hi Losif, Let's get some more details on your SC15 work so that we can work together w/ you to solve related issues. Beyond the 4-node topology, do you have more rough write up on your SC15 work so that we can engage to provide examples (or direct clients) for you to use? Jensen, Austin, and Kai can fully engage in the next two weeks to work together. I am tied up today but can chat on the phone tomorrow. Richard

Please see attached diagrams for the SC15. These include routes withing SC and connecting remote sites. I will put them on our supercomputing website soon. If you notice we have a mix of hardware from various vendors, however only Dell and Brocade will be part of the OF topology. Mellanox spectrum does not support OF yet. In the Interconnect diagram you will see the various hosts which will be dedicated to different demos, so that people running those demos will have free hand to continue their demos. I can dedicate few more machines where ALTO can be demonstrated, we need to ensure that everything will work involving ALTO. If you/team need early access to test/install any particular software in the testbed environment, please send me your keys and your source IP addresses. I am also available at "626.318.0100 " for any quick call. Thanks -Azher On 11/2/2015 11:46 AM, Y. Richard Yang
